Who’s the industry regulator?

Ofcom are the industry regulator for telecommunications.  If you’ve got any questions on who they are and what they do, we’ve tried to cover them here.

Ofcom

Ofcom are the independent industry regulator and competition authority for the home phone and broadband industry.  They formed from the old Oftel regulator, but with a greater remit that also includes regulating mobile communications, radio and TV (both terrestrial and digital).

As well as dealing with complaints and queries, Ofcom carry out consumer research to help them develop policies and promote competition.  If you have serious problems with your home phone or broadband provider, you should contact Ofcom – details can be found on their website at http://www.ofcom.org.uk.

For most other problems, you should start with your existing home phone or broadband provider, and ask them to resolve it rather than going directly to Ofcom.  If the problems persist, switching provider is usually a good option, and firsthelpline.com is the best place to start with a comparison.
